This is a great piece – thanks for sharing. We do quite a bit of Hispanic research and learn that education really *is* key.

It’s not that the Latinos we talk to don’t want to be healthy–it’s that they don’t always know where to go for mammograms, or that babies should be seen by a dentist as early as 6 months, or that a cheeseburger has x number of calories. There’s a lot of confusion around insurance and payments and services anyway, and when consumers are not English-dominant, those are exacerbated.

So LaVeist is right on when he comments that the best antidote to this misinformation or lack of information is education, early on in each child’s life. If that could be provided through an interactive health program in elementary schools that students share with the parents, they might just see a marked decrease in fatalities later in life.
